Restaurants That Make Healthy Eating Easy - and Delicious!!

Like most things in life, no restaurant is totally perfect.  However, Positive Plate dietitians assure diners that these winners had excellent nutritional positives at the time of selection, including good sanitation reports from the Sedgwick County Health Department.  Diners are on their own to sort out any negatives.  Most restaurants are smoke-free.

November 2005:   Barn’rds merited the Positive Plate Award for its suitable portion sizes and low-fat meats. Nearly everything they serve is made fresh daily.  The Hertel Family has owned and operated the business for the past 23 years.

September 2005:  Great Harvest Bread Company received the first Positive Plate Award. Only open for lunch, Great Harvest Bread Company makes its whole grain breads fresh in its bakery.  It also gives a choice between baby carrots and chips to round out  each tasty and filling sandwich.

January 2006: Jason’s Deli was presented the Positive Plate Award for its trans free menu. Also, their salad bar is convenient, attractive, and full of dark greens with a variety of other vegetables, beans, seeds, and other great nutritious salad additions.   

 Jason’s Delis has two Wichita locations:  2000 N. Rock Road and 7447 West 21st Suite 144.

March 2006:  Copper Oven Cafe got the Positive Plate Award for fast-food salads. Greens become fast food at the “Quick-Pick” station just inside the front door.  Owner Larry Burke said, “Salads are our Number One Sales item.”

The Copper Oven Cafe is a short drive from downtown,  2409 W. 13th Street, Wichita.

August 2006: The Positive Plate Award went to Wellness Policies of the Wichita Public Schools. Targeting vending machines, classroom celebrations and fund-raising at 100 school buildings, these policies offer nutrition choices in all grades. Covering 48000 students and 600 staff, these policies were created by discussion with principals and adopted by the school board. October 2006: Doc Green’s earned the Positive Plate Award for their promotion of salads. Doc Green’s encourages building your own salad including type of lettuce and toppings.  Doc Green’s also focuses on appropriate portion sizes.

February 2007Il Vicino was awarded the Positive Plate Award for offering moderate Italian food:  two sizes of pizzas and salads and a glass of heart-healthy red wine.

June 2007: O’Naturals Cafe got the Positive Plate Award because their menu gives diners delicious choices for organic foods and specialized diet needs such as lactose-, wheat- and gluten-free options.

O’Naturals is located in the Genesis Health Club at: 1551 N. Rock Road in Wichita. The public is welcome.

November 2007: The name, Roly Poly, may not sound like a restaurant that makes healthy eating easy and delicious - but it does. We felt we had to celebrate its satisfying, flavorful sandwich fillings laden with veggies and protein choices, rolled into neat tortilla packets.

December 2006: Super Suppers enables customers to prepare and take restaurant-quality food to their homes to finish and serve. Many entrees contain fruits or vegetables and a label which recommends a side dish which is often a vegetable; dietitians encourage customers to add a vegetable, salad, and milk to complete the healthy meal.

April 2007: Pho Hot was merited the Positive Plate Award for their lowfat menu. Unusual for oriental foods, Pho Hot seasons their tasty foods with herbs and spices and goes easy on sodium.

September 2007:  The Right Portion Right Price Menu at T.G.I.Friday’s deserved the award because it’s a treat not to overeat. That page of the menu highlights portion sizes that are appealing, realistic and satisfying.

Mediterranean_Grill

January 2008: The classic Mediterranean “diet” includes generous fresh and roasted veggies and olive oil. Locally that describes the food at the Mediterranean Grill, where nutrition is not only easy but delicious - it’s also elegant.

The Mediterranean Grill is located at 355 S. Armour in east Wichita.

 

May 2008: The Pita Pit was the recipient of the award as their menu highlights whole grain pitas, extensive vegetarian options, and grilled meats. In the near future, they have plans on creating a children’s menu which will include milk, yogurt, carrots, and smaller portions of meat.

Summer 2008: The Panera Bread Company was deserving of the Positive Plate Award. They were congratulated for whole grain bread choices, low fat side dish options, and healthy kid meals offerings.
